Populism is derived from the Greek word "populus" which means people.
Populism refers to such politics
There are ideas and activities that aim to gain the support of ordinary people. Give them what they want.
Such as elimination of inflation, elimination of unnecessary taxes and other basic demands. All these demands are popular public demands which cannot be denied.
A populist party or leader uses these demands in his political activities to gain the support of the people. He tries to prove that he is against the elite and with the people and that he has the solution to every public problem.
Surely you have in mind the names of some parties or leaders who have made good use of the populist agenda and gained power from it. If the names of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, Imran Khan, Narendra Modi comes to your mind, it is proof that these leaders have used the populist agenda to make themselves the representatives of the people.
Populists usually want simple solutions to complex issues. Populists are generally seen as opposed to large corporations such as banks, large corporations and the mass media.
Populism is such a vague and ambiguous political ideology that any group or individual can use it for its own ends.
Populism is used in different ways for different populist parties, leaders and movements. For example, left-wing populists' notions of "people and" elites generally revolve around socio-economic grievances, while right-wing groups generally focus on socio-cultural issues such as immigration.
Apparently there is no abomination in this kind of political agenda but populism brings with it a lot that is considered anti-democratic.
Suppose some members of a group agree on one thing, Mr. Saleem and Miss Sarah disagree, then the group of a few people ignore Mr. Saleem and Miss Sarah and consider themselves the voice of all. In a democracy, different opinions of different people are respected, while in democracy but in populism second voice is completely ignored, which gives rise to fascism.
The fact that populists want to change the status quo in the name of the people means that they can be a threat to democratic principles and social norms that value many people.
The agenda of populism is not bad, but its unnecessary and abusive use has discredited populism. It has played an important role in promoting nationalism all over the world, including Europe and the United States. Peace advocates and intellectuals see the use of populism as a major threat to democracy and society. It also points out that for an ideology to be good, it must be good in practice, otherwise good ideas. They become infamous for their misuse.
