Music legend Ilayaraja, the composer of more than 5,000 film songs claims he has received no royalties so far for any of his music compositions of the 1980s, a period largely considered his heyday.
To right this wrong, the ace composer, along with the Tamil Film Producers Council jointly met the city police commissioner on Thursday and filed a complaint against the Echo Recording Company, for not paying him royalties for his music in that period. He has also asked for action against the company for attempting to sell the rights for his film music to a north Indian company without getting his permission.
The complaint was filed following a recent news report that the Echo Recording Company was in negotiations with a north Indian company to sell the rights for the composer’s work for Rs 25 crore.
Just recently, in January, Ilayaraja had issued a stern warning against all those using his music in films, on television and on mobile phones without obtaining permission.
