Two years removed from re-injuring his wrist and falling outside the Top 100 with off-court issues, Agassi returned to the pinnacle of the sport. He won the French Open and reached the final of Wimbledon before his run to the 1999 US Open crown. Agassi dropped one set (to Justin Gimelstob in Round 3) in reaching the semifinals, where he fought from a set down to beat No. 3 seed Yevgeny Kafelnikov. In the final, Agassi edged countryman Todd Martin, 6-4, 6-7, 6-7, 6-3, 6-2, to earn his fifth Slam. With it, he supplanted Pete Sampras as world No. 1, ending Sampras’ six-year reign as the year-end top player.
