Taiwan has a complicated political history that began in 1912 when China's last imperial dynasty, the Qing, fell and the Republic of China was formed. After World War II, in 1949, the Communists led by Mao Zedong were victorious and the Nationalist government of the Republic of China moved to the island of Taiwan, leading to the current tense situation between Taiwan and China.

Taiwan is called the Republic of China and is not officially recognized as an independent country by many countries due to China's claims. However, Taiwan has its own political and economic system and is the world's leading producer of semiconductors and chips essential to global technology.
