The first, and, for many, most definitive shot across the bow of the French 'tradition of quality cinema'. No tripods, no master shots, no rules at all. Jean-Paul Belmondo and Jean Seberg are endlessly cool and endlessly aware of their fate in Godard's homage to American film noir.

During the sixties, the beauty of Godard's images increased in proportion to what many considered the incomprehensibility of his scenarios. Here Belmondo and Anna Karina hit the road to escape gangsters and the whole narrative construct of the film explodes into a kaleidoscope of images and ideas.

Godard's perverse love of word games, ideological paradox, cinematic self-reference and vivid imagery embarks him upon a tail-chasing episode for the ages in WEEK END. As pure an expression of the state of Godard's (and maybe the world's) tangled psyche on the eve of '68. Gorgeous. Infuriating. Unmissable.

It would be a shame not to commemorate Valentine's Day with one of Godard's oddball incursions into romance. This is his bright, colorful musical comedy, and it bears about as little resemblance to other musical comedies as you would expect. Anna Karina, Belmondo and Jean-Claude Brialy form the romantic triangle.
