From my research one of the most common failures on the more economical garage heaters that you buy from home improvement stores (such as BigMAXX and Mr Heater) is the High Limit switch/sensor.  This temperature sensor automatically cuts off the heater when the temp in the cabin gets above a certain point and is supposed to turn it back on when things cool down.

It's a $4 part.  But in winter, in my area, a repair call to somebody coming out to look at this would run you almost the price of the furnace originally.  So.. save yourself some hassle and check these things first.. cause if this is your problem the fix is very cheap and easy.
