Usually, while in Costa Rica, we are exploring hidden beaches, and climbing our favourite waterfalls, however while searching terrain on the gps one year for something different to do we came across a dot labeled chapel in the clouds. While we won’t get into it too much, as this special and totally wild place deserves a video of its own, we went there and became friends with John, the man who built and lives in this stunningly unique lost world high atop the mountains, in the middle of the Costa Rican jungle. Olger, a local guide and friend of John’s, knows our passion for adventure and wanted to take us on an overnight hike he really likes. Since he said it was the perfect time of year to do it, we decided to take him up on the offer and do it together.
The Sábadas Oka hike in Ujarrás, Costa Rica is about 10kms up (in 35+ degree weather with no trees or shade), it took us around 3.5 hours to get to the top (and a little over 2 to get back down). It starts at around 500m (1640 ft.) above sea level and climbs to 1760m (5775 ft.).
At the top there is a small shelter that we cooked and slept in. We had brought our tent, but it was so windy that there was no way we could have slept in it. Even in the shelter, the wind was whipping at the walls and kept us awake most of the night. In the morning we bush-wacked (jungle-wacked?!) for a couple kilometres down a steep jungle path, to see a beautiful hidden waterfall and then returned to the shelter start our hike back out. It was Olger and Gretel’s 22nd wedding anniversary, and since they don’t get many opportunities to get away together (and she’d never done the hike before), she came along too.
Follow along with us as we rescue a dog, visit John, and get burnt to a crisp on what turned out to be another epic adventure.
