As with so many issues in our body, uneven hips can indeed be caused by a sedentary lifestyle, not exercising enough, improperly working out, etc.  When I refer to your hip alignment being off, I'm referring to your pelvis being too far forward, back, and sideways.

Regarding a pelvic imbalance where it is too far forward, this is often due to tight hip flexors and weak hip extensors.  So you'll want to stretch what is tight and strengthen what is weak.  The same goes if your pelvis is tilted too far posteriorly.

Regarding a lateral pelvic tilt where it is too far to one side, this is often due to a weak gluteus medius and a quadratus lumborum that is too tight.  So you'll want to strengthen what is weak and stretch what is tight with the correct hip exercises.

By doing the above, many people should be helped out with the issue of uneven hips.  Of course, there are other things that can lead to this issue, but for many people, these particular things should help out.
