Defense of Zbarazh defensive battle
Defense of Zbarazh defensive battle conducted in days
July 10 - August 22, 1649.
The earth fortifications built around the castle in Zbaraż were defended during the Chmielnicki Uprising by a Polish crew of around 9,000 together with Wiśniowiecki's banners and a unit of German infantry.
These troops were commanded by three regimens: Andrzej Firlej, Stanisław Lanckoroński and Mikołaj Ostroróg, but the real defense commander was Prince Jeremi Wiśniowiecki, the Russian voivode.
All these events were preceded by the outbreak of the Cossack Uprising on the sietch led by Bohdan Chmielnicki. The defeat of the crown troops at Żółte Woda and Korsuń opened the way for the Cossack troops into the depths of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.
The republic, torn by internal conflicts after the death of King Władysław IV, chose Jan Kazimierz as king, who sent the Regim Commentaries with the army to the wild fields. The ineffectiveness of the Polish army led to the siege of the Zbaraska fortress and, as a consequence, the relief and the battle of Zborów and the settlement of Zborowska.
