Ok so we are back with episode 3 of Ahsoka, and we need to break it down, so let’s get straight into it. We open with Sabine training with the lightsaber, and teaching her the forms is Master Huyang. And it looks like he is taking her through the basic steps of Shii Cho, which is form 1 of the classic lightsaber styles. And it makes sense as to why, as form 1 is the most basic form of lightsaber style and tends to be the foundational base that Jedi often build upon. As Sabine goes through the motions the entire scene really reminded me of Mando’s own training scene in the book of boba fett. It’s also worth mentioning that Huyang is holding holographic images of tatami mats, which were traditionally used during katana cutting practice in Japan. And Huyang with the four arms he really looks a whole lot like General Grievous. The training stops, and Huyang examines his holograms where we can see the cuts that Sabine made in orange and the white circles which were meant to be her intended targets. And it's quite clear that Sabine still has a long way to go. Although that being said, it does appear to be a very difficult exercise especially for someone who has limited connection to the force.

Ahsoka then refers to something called Zatochi. Zatoichi, while a completely new name in Star Wars, is actually a reference to a Japanese character by the very same name. Created by the novelist Kan Shimozawa, Zatoichi was a blind swordsman, an archetype that has been adopted several times in star wars across many different characters such as Chirrut Imwe, Rahm Kota from the force unleashed, and more closely related, Kanan Jarrus. Sabine is then told that she needs to not only train her body but her mind, which perhaps represents the existential issue Sabine faces. Her Mandalorian nature and her rash personality makes it very difficult for her to break out of old habits, which is also why Master Huyang points out that there have been very few Mandalorians who became jedi.

Ahsoka asks Sabine to wear a visor to blind her, essentially asking her to use the force instead of her eyes. Which is a standard training trope that we have seen time and time again in Star Wars. And the lack of vision during the exercise is why it is named Zatoichi. On Sabine’s visor we can even see the symbol for the jedi order. But as Sabine goes through the exercise with very limited success, it's actually not very clear if the few times she made contact with Ahsoka was because she used the force or sheer aggression. And although this training method is very common in star wars, the way it is done is a breath of fresh air. You see, unlike other characters like Luke or Rey, Sabine genuinely struggles much more with the task. Despite having been taught how to wield a lightsaber before, she still struggles with more force sensitive tasks which really stands in contrast to other more force talented people like Luke or Anakin who pick things up really really fast. I actually think it helps ground the idea that not everyone in the galaxy is blessed with such talent that the skywalkers might have.

Hera attends a meeting with Chancellor Mon Mothma, making this the furthest along the timeline we have seen her. Next to her is senator Hamato Xiono, who is the father of Kazuda Xiono, or better known as Kaz who was featured in Star Wars Resistance. And in my opinion a somewhat underrated show among the other star wars shows. We also get to see Senator Rodrigo and Senator Mawood. Both of which are entirely new characters. Mon Mothma makes a reference to Jacen who is the son of Hera and Kanan, a character which was featured briefly at the end of Rebels and will make an appearance later on. Hera provides her report on the Santh Shipyards on Corellia, referencing the previous episode and she warns about the resuring imperial presence throughout the galaxy. Along with the possible threat of Thrawn. And here’s where things get interesting. The other senators essentially accuse Hera of using the false threat of Thrawn to use Republic resources to find Ezra. And it also becomes clear that the senators are fully on pacifist mode. And under Mon Mothma, this was indeed the case. There was effectively no standing military and zero appetite for more military operations, and in a way it is also the reemergence of that inefficient republic bureaucracy that plagued the republic prior to its fall. So it's really interesting to see this element make a return and contribute to what would be the eventual rise of the first order. Hera’s request is refused but not before dropping a burn that rivaled Anakin’s experience on Mustafar (scene)...
