Every tactic works unopposed! Let us look at what prone handcuffing looks like when a suspect seeks to deploy a firearm from the waistline.

** NOTE - This is NOT intended to be research. It shows you what is reasonable movement.
**NOTE - My times were slightly slower since I was seeking to acquire a target before shooting.

.6 of a second to make a decision!

00:51 Total Movement Time is considered to be when the officer can articulate non-compliant movement until the time the suspect deploys the firearm. This is for the purpose of this video only.

01:18 Train officers on the movement pattern of weapon deployments. Show them what it looks like. Go slow and fast, discuss it, and have them verbalize the pros and cons of what they are seeing.

01:43 Think about when you train officers to tell a suspect who is in a prone position to put both hands in the small of their back. Demonstrate how the movement pattern is similar to moving your hands to the front waistline where weapons are often kept. Discuss the pros and cons of this command.

02:03 Trainers should be talking about what commands an officer should give. Are they Alpha Commands?

02:58 The most important time frame is when a weapon is observed and when the weapon is deployed. I was able to do this in a range of .8 to 1 second.

04:22 Officer reaction time is their ability to know where to look and what to pay attention to.

05:30 Train different positions to help officers learn what they can and can't see. Research suggests posting about 45 degrees of the right rear of the suspect. This is for the Cover officer, NOT the Contact officer.

06:50 What the research says. https://www.researchgate.net/publicat...

Shooting to the Right .59 - .63 sec
Shooting to the Left .63 - .71 sec
Shooting towards the North (Chest Up/Head) .52 sec

07:40 When we approach a prone suspect from the right we are in danger. When we approach from the left, we may have slightly more time to react.

08:44 Should we train officers to only tell the suspect to put their left hand in the small of their back vs. both hands in the small of their back? Discuss the pros and cons.

09:43 We need to train officers how to handcuff from the left and right sides in the prone position.
