✍️ This might be the first time you’re hearing about MyWhoosh, but I promise that it won’t be the last.
This Saudi-backed cycling platform is making waves in the indoor cycling space, recently announcing that they they secured the UCI Virtual Cycling Championships for the next 3 years, wrestling the lucrative contract away from Zwift. But how does MyWhoosh stack up against the Zwift juggernaut?
There are three big points to cover about MyWhoosh: we’ll call them the good, the bad, and the ugly.
While we review the good, the bad, and the ugly, I’m going to let some of the in-game footage that I’ve recorded over the past week play out in the background.
    1) The first point, the good one, is that this game is completely free to play. This is especially impressive for how many different routes the game has (983 kilometers across five different world regions), an impressive workout interface (and seriously well-designed workout plans), and the level of support. The amount of content you get for free is mind-boggling, and that’s what drew me over to MyWhoosh to give it a try in the first place. Granted, the world is rather devoid of other human riders at this point, I’ll often only encounter about one per hour, but MyWhoosh has loaded many bot riders into their worlds in an attempt to make it feel more populated. TrainingPeaks integration is great, you can see me riding one of the workouts I’ve designed right here. Strava support could use a fix, though, because your ride automatically uploads as soon as your workout is complete, so if you end up continuing to ride after the conclusion of your workout it erroneously uploads as two separate rides. Not the end of the world, but it’s just one example of the bugs that need to be ironed out.
    2) The second point, the bad one, is that there is no support for MAC OS users. MyWhoosh claims this will be available before the end of the year, and I can only imagine they’re working furiously to get this pushed out as quickly as possible as they ramp up towards the UCI e-sports world championships. Being a Mac user, myself, I’ve been running MyWhoosh on my iPhone and screen-mirroring it to my MacBook for a larger display. Not ideal, at all. This creates a cable-cluttered desk, an iPhone that feels about 200-degrees to the touch, a frame-rate in the mid-20s, and I obviously don’t have the ability to use my phone for extra-curricular activities while I ride.
Now, this isn’t an issue if you’re on Windows or Android devices, as MyWhoosh is fully compatible on those systems. And, as you could infer, it’s compatible on iOS, so you can run it on your iPhone or iPad.
    3) The third point, the ugly one, is MyWhoosh’s financial-backing. I’ll just hit the wave-tops and point out that MyWhoosh is free to play because it’s completely funded by the government of the UAE. The head of the primary investment group is the son of the founder of the UAE, and if you check any internet forum involving MyWhoosh you’ll quickly see a lot of accusations being thrown around about UAE’s “sports washing” campaign.
Some folks will have a hard time seeing past this point, while others will argue that they’re here to virtual cycle, not make a political statement. You can make your own decision on that one.
Wrapping it up, I see a lot of potential with the MyWhoosh platform. The free to play nature makes it a no-brainer to test out, and the ease of setting it up on your device and indoor trainer hardware is impressive. There’s still plenty for the platform to improve upon, namely the Mac support and lack of users, but with the 2024-through-2026 UCI cycling e-sports championships contract confirmed and right around the corner, I can only imagine it’s a matter of time until more and more inquisitive cyclists migrate over to the platform to see what it’s all about.
----------
Virtual cycling refers to the immersive and interactive experience of cycling indoors, typically using a stationary exercise bike paired with a computer or smartphone app. Cyclists can simulate riding through a variety of virtual landscapes and routes, complete with realistic terrain and visual cues, all while tracking their performance metrics such as speed, distance, and heart rate in real-time. This technology has gained popularity through platforms like Zwift and MyWhoosh, which enables users to engage in virtual group rides and races, fostering a sense of community and competition among cyclists from around the world.
