Today we'll be discussing the TAG Heuer Aquaracer 300 meter Calibre 16 Automatic Chronograph. Now it's 43 millimeters in brushed and polished stainless steel, uniquely faceted with a black ceramic insert on the unidirectional rotating diver's bezel.
It's best to start from the outside and work our way in. As with all dive watches, the essential ingredient is a robust case, bracelet and clasp combination, and TAG Heuer delivers. Now the bracelet is substantial, it's a 3-link design with differentiating facets. You can see it's a satin finish on the top and the shoulders, and the absolute flanking portions of the links are to a high polish for contrast. The same treatment is applied to the case itself which features both satin and high polished segments, for visual articulation and to break up the immense mass of the 43 millimeter dive style case.
The clasp itself is both substantial and nuanced, so it has a little bit of brains and brawn in equal measure. Now the twin trigger deploying action means that you do need positive release to disengage the clasp, it's not friction fit, it can't simply pop open. Once it's open, you have the option of a dive extension which can be used to fit the watch over a wetsuit, dry suit, or even a large winter coat or thick sweater for you desk divers out there.
The watch also features a robust construction such that the bezel itself has an insert made of black ceramic. Now the ceramic is effectively indelible, it has the same kind of scratch and scuff resistance that you find on a sapphire crystal, so it's designed for long wearing durability, and it's important to note that even within the ceramic there are additional nuances including silver lacquered Arabic numerals and indices. The pearl at 12 o'clock within the triangular index can be aligned with minute hand of the watch, such that even while the chronograph is running, you can align the minute hand with the index and time a separate event between zero and sixty minutes, so you can have two separate intervals being timed by the watch.
The watch features large faceted chronograph pushers for easy access to it's primary complication and a knurled crown that is a screw-down endowing the watch with 300 hundred meter water resistance. Inboard of the bezel, the watch features a unique series of dial textures. Now there's what's known as azeraj on top of the chronograph sub-registers of the dial, so chronograph minutes at 12 o'clock, and hours at 6 o'clock, as well as a vertical striation that's a signature of the Aquaracer line. All of the indices are high polished and hand applied for precision.
Inside the case, beneath the engraved case back, TAG Heuer fits it's Calibre 16 Automatic Winding Chronograph. Now it's protected by 300 meter water resistance. It has automatic winding so with efficient unidirectional winding action, it rapidly tops up it's 42-hour power reserve. Now it's very robust and it has a couple of additional refinements. You can see through the magnifier of the date window the date wheel, and it can be rapidly reset should the watch run down or encounter an irregular length month, by means of a quick-set function. Screw out the crown, pull it to extremity and you hack the balance, allowing precise synchronization of the sports watch to a known accurate reference clock or dive timer.
