Once you learn what sounds letters make in Italian, reading is a breeze. Here are the trickiest combinations to learn.
1) Gli: In most cases, the letter combination G-L-I, like in famiglia (family), has a soft sound that sounds very similar to the combination L-I, but with a slight tensing of the muscles in the back of your throat and tongue.
2) Gn: The letter combination G-N, like in lasagna, is very similar to the ñ in Spanish. It's a nasally sound that usually involves pressing your tongue to the roof of your mouth.
3) Sc: When followed by i, like in Sci - skiing, or e, like in scelta - choice, the letter combination S-C sounds very similar to the SH sound in English.
