Professional vocalist teaches the amazing Viena Karelian yoik voice breaking technique!
Moikku! Here’s a singing tutorial for anyone who wants to learn cool new vocal techniques and new ways to use their voice. This voice breaking technique is used in Viena Karelian yoik – a type of traditional folk song that has been around for at least 300 years! I love the traditional songs but I also use the technique in my contemporary folk music compositions. This video concentrates on the technique through the traditional song type but I am planning on a more in-depth video about traditional Viena Karelian yoik, perhaps teaching one whole song. About me:
I’m a Finnish singer, composer and fiddler specialized in Finno-Ugric folk music. My expertise is in traditional singing traditions and techniques such as Finnish (and Swedish) herding calls, Ingrian heterophonic chorus runolaulu and Viena Karelian yoik. I have recently graduated with a Master of Music degree from the Sibelius Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki!
