The Istanbul Grand Bazaar (Kapalıçarşı) is one of the largest and oldest markets in the world. Here are some interesting facts about it:
• Location: The Grand Bazaar is located inside the walled city of Istanbul, in the district of Fatih. It stretches roughly between the mosques of Beyazit and Nuruosmaniye.
• Size: The total area of the market is 45,000 square meters, and it has more than 3,600 shopsspread out over 64 streets.
• Visitors: The daily number of visitors varies, between 300,000 and 500,000 depending on the time of year.
• Origins: The Grand Bazaar’s origins go back to the time of Mehmed II. Initially, artisan workshops sprung up around an old bazaar building, creating a network nearby. Over time, these buildings grew in number, and the streets were covered. The complex was eventually walled in, resulting in the enormous market we see today.
• Shopping Experience: Visiting Istanbul and not seeing the Grand Bazaar would be like traveling to Marrakech and not touring its souk. Its thousands of colorful stalls will keep you astounded for as long as you allow them to: hundreds of business owners are just waiting to haggle with you! Be sure to work them down and get the best possible price.
• Schedule: The Grand Bazaar is open from Monday to Saturday, 8:30 am to 7:30 pm. Sundays are closed.
• Transport: You can reach the Grand Bazaar by tram (Beyazit-Kapalıçarşı stop) from Sultanahmet and Sirkeci.
