At news conferences taking place in Edmonton and Calgary, Tyler Shandro, the Alberta minister of health, and Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Alberta’s chief medical officer of health, provide an update on the COVID-19 situation in the province. They are joined by Dr. Verna Yiu, president and CEO of Alberta Health Services. Shandro announces new funding of up to $36 million to hire more aides in home care and continuing care facilities, and to increase wages for certified aides. This additional support aims to address the fourth wave of the pandemic and free up hospital beds. Shandro and Hinshaw face questions from reporters on additional measures the government is prepared to introduce, including a proof of vaccination system, if COVID-19 cases continue to rise in Alberta.
