Recently, India became the world’s most populous country. But India might have taken over China a while ago. People question China’s claimed population of 1.4 billion. Yi Fuxian, a leading expert on China’s demographic data, has said that Beijing inflates its population and fertility rate. The Russians and the Japanese estimated that China’s population might be as long as 800 million. Based on recent studies on newborn vaccines, pandemic travel, and salt consumption, I think China’s real population is under 1 billion.

Post production note: Here is a comment from a viewer on the calculation of the 2023 population. He is correct. Please read his note below:

Lei, in the Travel Comparisons chart, the Chinese population field is a derived number (Total Commercial Person/Trips, divided by Average # of trips pp). The denominators in 2019 & 2023 are different (3.04 vs 2.50). As such, we should not take the quantity change of (1,389) and divide it by 2.5. We should instead work out the 2023 Chinese population (less 422m "Poverty") by dividing 1,595 by 2.5 to derive 638. Then deduct this 638 from 986 for a change of (348).
