The shear and normal stresses
The shear and normal stresses of a tensile specimen depend on the angle considered, relative to the applied load. In tensile specimens, the normal stress is a maximum when theta = 0 degrees (perpendicular to the axis of the specimen) and the shear stress is a maximum when theta = 45 degrees to the axis of the specimen.
