A playthrough of Capcom's 1994 license-based platformer for the NES game, Disney's Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers 2.

As one of the last official releases for the NES, Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers 2 nearly missed the party. Most people had long since moved onto 16-bit machines by 1994, but for those who were stubbornly clinging to the decrepit NES, Capcom still had a couple surprises left up its sleeve. Chip 'n Dale 2 was perhaps the nicest of those surprises.

It was an excellent follow-up to the 1990 Rescue Rangers game (Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers (NES) Pl... ). Not much has changed between the games, but as was the case with DuckTales 2, everything on offer here was of top quality.

The sequel features the same game play as the original did. Chip and/or Dale run through areas filled with oversized items while throwing boxes at a variety of robots and bugs as they try to solve a mystery.

It's a bit more linear than the original game. The map is gone and there's only one branching path that allows you to play the three stages leading up the the final one in any order, but the game play feels more refined than before. You can throw crates diagonally now, the boss fights are more creative and challenging than they were in the first game, and there are some new bonus areas that can only be accessed with a bit of teamwork in the two player mode.

The graphics are much more detailed and colorful this time, and there's impressively little flicker and slowdown throughout. The music is good, too - the soundtrack isn't nearly as memorable as the first game's, but it is energetic and it suits the action well.

I really enjoyed Rescue Rangers 2. It's a well-made game that knows how to entertain and charm.

(And if you don't want to shell out several hundred for an original NES cart, you can grab it cheap as part of The Disney Afternoon Collection!)
