For a long time, drawings were considered simple sketches, a precursor to other works of art. However, in the 1960s, drawings underwent an intriguing transformation. Young artists broke with conventions, sought new forms of expression, and boldly experimented with materials, techniques, and creative ideas. In this interview, our curator, Dr. Christian Rümelin, explains why drawings experienced a crucial turning point in this era and why their immediacy and creativity make them truly unique.

This exhibition features selected exhibits from the impressive private collection of Heinz Günter Prager. As a sculptor, draftsman, and graphic artist, Prager began collecting paper works by contemporary artists early on. After a decades-long close relationship between the artist and the museum, the Germanisches Nationalmuseum was able to acquire this previously unreleased collection in 2023.
