Cairns is enduring its worst flooding in more than a century with Queensland's Premier asking the defence force to join the urgent rescues of stranded residents.
Ex-Tropical Cyclone Jasper has dumped over 2m of rain across parts of the region, swelling rivers and washing away roads, leaving thousands without power and parts of the airport underwater.
Authorities are focussing on areas including the airport, Machans Beach and Yorkeys Knob to the north of the city centre.
Local leaders are warning emergency services are becoming exhausted by the scale of the disaster.
Queensland Premier Steven Miles updates on the situation from QFES headquarters.
