Really neat footage of Wolf
Really neat footage of Wolf V090 chasing a deer fawn in late July. The deer fawn was about 1 minute ahead of V090 and when V090 emerged in the frame, she was panting heavily, suggesting she had been searching for the fawn for a while.
Interestingly, V090 circles in front of the camera trying to get a good scent trail to follow. She clearly knew that the fawn's scent had stopped in the general area the fawn ducked into the woods, which is what caused V090 to turn around and circle. However, it took her a bit of time to figure out where the fawn went.
By the end of the video, V090 headed off in the general area that fawn had gone suggesting she had found the scent trail again. However, we suspect that V090 was not successful in this attempt for two reasons.
First, by late July most fawns can readily evade wolves and most chases are not successful. Wolf predation on fawns peaks in June when fawns are still young, hiding, and vulnerable. However, by early July, fawns are able to outrun wolves and predation on fawns drops precipitously at this point and remains low for the rest of the summer.
Second, we had several videos of a doe with a single fawn on this camera before this “chase”, and shortly after the doe and fawn were still observed on camera. Of course, this is not foolproof evidence.
It is possible the fawn being chased was a different fawn. However, we think it most likely that the fawn that was chased was the same one that had been hanging out in the area.
Ultimately, we will never know but always interesting to get footage of predation behaviors that we rarely, if ever, get to observe.
