The Buddha & The Angry Businessman - A Powerful Short Wisdom Story In Forgiveness & Empathy

In this short Buddhist wisdom story, we learn about an angry businessman, who, due to his skepticism and cynicism, thought that his children should not be spending time with The Buddha but rather learning the business and so he tried to insult The Buddha but walked away learning a powerful lesson. Watch the full video to find out what he learned.

Once, The Buddha was in an assembly when a man walked in looking furious. He thought The Buddha was doing something wrong. He was a restless businessman and he had found that his children were spending hours with The Buddha when they could have engaged themselves in business at that time, helping the business make more money. He felt that spending four hours of their day seated next to someone whose eyes were always closed was disgusting and this really upset the businessman.

With furiousness, he walked straight up to The Buddha, looked him in the eye and he was so angry that he could not find the words to express his anger. So to express what he felt, he spits on The Buddha’s face. In response, The Buddha simply smiled. He showed no anger, though the disciples around him were angry. They would have liked to react but could not because The Buddha was there. So everybody was holding their lips and fists tight. After the businessman spit at The Buddha, The Buddha did not react or say anything. He just smiled. And that was enough to surprise the angry man because he was expecting to have a bitter fight with The Buddha and his disciples. For the first time in his life, the man had met someone who would just smile when you spit on their face. When the businessman realized that his actions were not going to draw any reaction, he simply walked away.

But that man, he could not sleep all night. He was shivering and shaking. He felt as if his entire world had turned upside down as if his whole body was undergoing a transformation. The next day he went to The Buddha again, and fell at his feet and begged for forgiveness. “I did not understand my actions. Please forgive me!” To which The Buddha replied, “I cannot forgive you!”

Now The Buddha used to talk a lot about forgiveness, so everyone, including the man and The Buddha's disciples, was stunned. Did The Buddha just refuse to forgive this man? The Buddha then explained the reason for his statement. He said, “How can I forgive you when you have done nothing wrong?” The businessman looked even more surprised and in an attempt to remind The Buddha about the events of the previous day, he told The Buddha that it was him who had wronged The Buddha by spitting on him. The Buddha simply said, “Oh! That person is not there now. If I ever meet that person whom you spit on, I will tell him to excuse you. To this person who is here, you have done nothing wrong.”

Now why did I choose this particular story to share with you? Well, there’s a couple reasons for that. What The Buddha did over there, is real forgiveness and that is real empathy. Real forgiveness does not only involve forgiving the other person. It also involves forgiving the part of you that was insulted. This gives you the freedom to move ahead in life and not let other people’s insults define how you live your life. Other people’s thoughts and actions towards you should not be responsible for you compromising your standards. And real empathy? Real empathy is not only understanding why someone did what they did. It is not only forgiving them for their actions but also empowering them to forgive themselves so that they too can move ahead in life. So the next time someone tries to insult you, don’t only lift yourself higher from their insults, but through your actions, also help them see beyond their current thoughts and paradigms.
