What is a Paranoid Personality Disorder (PPD)?
As the name suggests it is a cluster A personality disorder. As a mental illness it is characterised by persistent suspiciousness, generalized distrust to others and paranoid delusions.
Patients with PPD are constantly observing the outside world, searching for threats or other signs of dangers to validate their fears and biases. They may be hypersensitive, easily insulted and can’t appreciate other interpretations or evidence.
Their suspiciousness and mistrust causes them to live guarded and constricted lives. In addition patients might reduce meaningful emotional contact with others and quite generally live isolated lives.
Other symptoms may be the tendency to judge other people as hostile, keeping grudges and the tendency to self-reference.

PPD is quite rare, as it affects about 0,5-2,5% of the general population. It is more common among men. Although, exact numbers are unknown.

It is still unclear how a PPD is caused, however it is believed to be caused by a combinations of factors. Biological ones (like paranoid traits) and psychological factors (like the projection of negative internal feelings and the upbringing you have had).

Lastly PPD often occurs in conjunction with other mental health disorders, most commonly other personality disorders (liks schizotypal, schizoid, narcissistic, avoidant and borderline).

The effectiveness of  treatments:
Here I want to mention that a key part of treatment is gaining and keeping a patient’s trust. As people with PPD will often start to avoid treatment sessions because they distrust their therapist.
In addition patients with PDD usually do not seek treatment on their own, because they do not see themselves as having a problem. However when a patients does seek treatment, psychotherapy will be one of the best treatment options.

It will aim to increase general coping skills, focussing on trust and empathy. Psychotherapy can also help to improve communication skills, social interaction and boost self esteem. It achieves this by letting patients explore unconscious factors behind their feelings. Which can help to resolve past conflicts that may cause current problems.

In addition, several medications might be prescribed if a patient’s symptoms are severe. Anti-anxiety, antidepressant and anti-psychotic drugs are often prescribed and can be helpful.
These could also be used to treat co-occuring mental health disorder. For example, if a patients is also suffering from a depression, antidepressant might be useful.

Ultimately it is best to discuss these treatment options with your physician to identify which ones are most suitable for you.
