Pros & Cons Of Blake Stitch Shoe Construction
Many of you are familiar with Goodyear Welting, but Blake Stitch is the other main type of construction for shoes. It's a more easily resoleable construction that is a byproduct of the Industrial Revolution.
Special machinery stitches the shoe from the inside, an automation step which makes these shoes less expensive. It's generally a more Southern European method, allowing for a sleeker sole. It's also suited to warmer, drier climates as Blake Stitched shoes experience water uptake more easily.
We've recently reviewed Beckett Simonon brand shoes, a Blake Stitched brand, with most styles coming in at around $200. You can use code BU20 to get a discount if you'd like a pair of your own.
Pros of Blake Stitched shoes:
• Less expensive than Goodyear Welted
• Resoleable
• Often more comfortable than Goodyear Welted with quicker break-in period as the shoe is more flexible overall
• Allows for thinner, sleeker shoe designs
Cons:
• More vulnerable to water infiltration
• Repairs require specialized machinery
• Internal stitching causes noticeable irritation to foot in lower-end shoes
Hence we can see that, contrary to popular opinion, Blake Stitched shoes aren't necessarily inferior to their Goodyear Welted counterparts. Rather, it depends on your particular needs in a dress shoe.
