Welcome to my first lesson for absolute beginners on acoustic guitar!

In today's lesson, I'm going to teach you the most important things you need to know in order to start playing guitar. In your very first acoustic guitar lesson, we'll learn 3 things that will help you be able to play songs right away:

First, all of the reading that you'll need to be able to do... and we're not talking little black dots on the page.. we're talking chord shapes and chord charts - very basic things you can learn in less than two minutes!

We learn how chord switching works and how you can quickly get to the point where you can play songs with just two chord shapes.

We also learn how to bring the guitar to life with strumming and developing our internal rhythm.

The lesson begins with learning how to read a chord chart. It's basically a picture of the fretboard that tells you where to put your fingers so that you can make chord shapes. Whether it's the easiest chord ever, or a "minor 7 flat 5" chord, we just put some dots down on a picture of the fretboard, and that tells you where to put your fingers.

We also need to learn how to read a chord chart, which basically indicates how long to play each chord for. For example: in some songs, we play a chord for 4 beats and then we switch to the next one, in other songs we play a chord for 8 beats and then we switch to the next one, and a chord chart makes that all very clear. I have tons of chord charts available on my Patreon page. Here's a link: Patreon: goodguitarist

Once we've taken care of basic guitar literacy, we can shift our attention towards chord switching - the act of changing from one chord shape to the next. I like to start with two chord songs as this lets us build up muscle memory effectively. If you learn a few two chord songs, all the sudden you'll know five or six chord shapes, and then you'll be able to start combining those and you'll be on your way to being able to play whatever song you like. It's not about having a giant chord vocabulary, it's about being really good at the simple things.

The two chords used in this tutorial can be practiced here: Chord Switching Practice - A to E - E...

We talk about strumming and rhythm, and this is what brings the music to life. A lot of people get distracted by the downstrokes and upstrokes but the rhythm starts inside. I want to make sure that you are able to feel the beat, to count out loud, to say the strumming pattern. And once you can do that, it's just a matter of adding downstrokes and upstrokes. You activate the guitar with the rhythm that you're feeling inside.

Finally we put this all together, the chords and the strumming. We read a chord chart and play through it. That's just what it's like to play a song. I also have an easy song book available on my Patreon, that will help you decide what song to learn next. They're organized in a way that if you went through, and learned the songs in order, you would master all the basic chord shapes by the time you're done. I also have my complete beginners course, which will guide you through that process step by step, and teach you much, much more.

I wish you all the best. If you need any help, please don't hesitate to ask. Good luck!
-James
