Ushuaia
Ushuaia is a city in Argentina and the capital of the province of Tierra del Fuego, Antarctica, and the South Atlantic Islands. Its name comes from the Yagan indigenous language: ushu + aia (deep + bay = deep bay), and is pronounced in Castilian uˈswaʝa .
Its region has been inhabited by man for thousands of years and was colonized by Europeans in the mid-nineteenth century, who set up missions to catechize the indigenous people. These, however, soon disappeared under the impact of acculturation and the devastation caused by epidemics brought by the colonizers.
The city grew slowly over the first half of the 20th century, organizing itself around the installation of a large prison, which brought in many administrative officials and attracted new settlers but also left a dark impression of the place.
From the middle of the century, the prison was extinguished, the culture diversified and progress took place faster, with the installation of various services, the improvement of urban infrastructure and the creation of government incentives for the establishment of new residents. Currently, the city is an important tourist center in Argentina and became famous with the slogan Ciudad más austral del mundo ("The southernmost city in the world").
