My refrigerator is making a rattling noise. What should I do?

Turn off the ice maker so you can get some sleep.

I don't know if it is the ice maker.

If the icemaker has a frozen water line, it will make ice in uneven chunks and vibrate as it tries to push water past the iceberg.

What else could it be?

The most likely cause is the condenser or compressor. You'll hear rattling or even popping as it tries to run despite a loss of refrigerant.

The compressor is really expensive.

If it is broke, you'll have to replace the whole thing. Even a hairline crack in the compressor that lets moisture in and refrigerant out can cause this problem.

I wish there was an easy solution.

It might be the condenser fan. If dust or lint gets stuck in the blades, the fan could make a rattling noise.

I never thought of cleaning the outside of the fridge. I hardly even clean the inside of the fridge.

Cleaning the dirt and cob webs off the outside heat exchanger coils will improve the refrigerator's efficiency overall.

But it won't replace missing refrigerant or a broken part.

The problem might be the defrost timer. If the rattling comes from the bottom of the fridge, it may mean the defrost timer needs to be replaced.

Or it could be something else stuck under the fridge.

The dust bunnies have to have been multiplying for quite a time to sufficiently block air flow under the refrigerator for the vent down there to rattle a lot.

It is another low tech solution, and free but for my time.

It is either that or something was left to evolve so long in the fridge that it escaped and is now hiding down there.

Don't give me nightmares. The repair bills for the condenser are scary enough as is.
