Metalworking Sink or Swim by
Metalworking Sink or Swim by Tom Liption is entertaining and filled with darn useful tips.
Tom does a unusually good job of walking the reader through hundreds (thousands?) of useful machine shop and fabrication tips (with plenty of accompanying pictures). The amazon reviews back me up: even folks with years of experience have good things to say.
Reading it makes you feel like you're getting some real "inside" tips that you wouldn't otherwise get unless you had the opportunity to work (for years...) in a shop (and, frankly, you'd have to work in various different shops: machine, welding, fab, job, etc).
My only gripe is some pictures were on a page following the text, requiring the reader to flip back/forth.
