The new Galaxy S10 range is here and the S10 Plus and the S10 both feature a new ultrasonic fingerprint sensor embedded underneath their display, Samsung said it's faster, more accurate, secure and you can even use it with wet fingers, dirt obscured fingers and you don't have to accurately place your finger on it to work.

According to Qualcomm, who makes the 3D Sonic Sensor used, it's more secure than the existing 2D optical scanners found in the likes of the OnePlus 6T, Huawei Mate 20 Pro and the Oppo RX17 Pro. It uses sound waves to create a 3D map of the valleys and ridges that make up a fingerprint, while also being able to detect blood flow, and this prevents the system from being spoofed with an image or 3D model.

Every smartphone brand who uses the optical scanner method will say they have improved its accuracy using one method or the other, for example, Huawei uses a 10-level dynamic pressure sensor that unlocks the phone once you apply a slight amount of pressure on the display. They also feature a floating touch technology, so your device is able to detect your finger even when it is slightly above the screen.

Optical scanners use some light to illuminate your finger and a tiny camera under the screen takes an image of your finger which is then compared to the stored image of your finger, whereas the new ultrasonic sensor used in the S10 Plus takes a 3D capture of all the ridges and valleys that make up your skin, compared to a 2D image, making it faster, more accurate and more secure. It also means you can be as sloppy as you want when unlocking your phone and the S10 Plus can even be unlocked without having to press the power button first.

The sensor is just 0.15 millimetres thick and can scan through up to 800 micrometres of glass and up to 650 micrometres of aluminium, hence why Samsung is able to place it under the S10's display without adding bulk to the phone.  It could also mean that you'll be able to use a tempered glass screen protector as long as it's certified by Samsung or if it uses liquid adhesive but can make the installation process more complicated.

Currently, the S10 Plus has a heart rate monitor on the back next to the camera, but with UltraSonic Fingerprint sensor, maybe we'll see them integrate that with the scanner on the front where it would feel more natural to use.  I particularly like how fast and responsive it is and how I can use it with wet fingers and I don't have to worry about accurately placing my finger for it to work.
