Saint Porphyrios speaks at 3:38.
We warmly thank the philologist Ms Charikleia Vetsou Yagnam for the text she composed, which you listened to at the prologue, after it was appropriately adjusted for the narration. Below is Ms Charikleia Vetsou Yagnam’s original text:
“How much do the words of the saintly Elder Porphyrios echo the words of Paul the Apostle: ‘Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach the unsearchable riches of Christ...(Ephesians 3:8)’, which means: To me, the least of all Christ’s friends, this Grace was given to proclaim God’s unsearchable riches. For, with how much bashfulness does this Elder and intimate of God then, nowadays a fellow-citizen of the Saints – he who secretly and inconspicuously sought his relationship with God and therefore he envied the little nightingale that warbles hymns of praise to God, deeply hidden in the shadow of the dew – break the barrier of a sworn silence with the force of the Truth that is so POWERFUL! IT IS THE TRUTH THAT HE EXPERIENCES! Can the blind man hush when he regains his sight? The lost child who finds its mother? Or perhaps the poor when he beholds a treasure and the thirsty man before the spring? And if someone meets Christ “in Glory” at some quarter-sphere of the Third Heaven, if they are overwhelmed by Divine Love? For how long can they remain silent?
“My children”, he says, “There exists Satan, Hell, Death... But if you live with Christ, all these things fade away, they don’t exist to you...”. And then again modestly (as if he remembered the little nightingale) he says: “That’s what I ask for in my silence, to live these things (he is referring to God’s wonders)”. That’s my struggle. I live making this effort, because... I once went into a place (he means he had a mystical experience). I remember it, I saw it. I am here now, but I yearn to be “there”. Forgive me for an Elder shouldn’t be talking about that stuff; but you know, IF one goes mad, they speak. There is a MADNESS.
And when he said “MADNESS”, another figure crossed my mind of a man who said: “I am become a fool in glorying”, that was Paul, the divine Apostle. It was the moment when he let himself confess to his own Beloveds something more. And what did he say then? “I knew a man in Christ above fourteen years ago … such an one caught up to the third heaven. And I knew such a man ... how that he was caught up into paradise, and heard unspeakable words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter.” (2 Cor. 12:2-4).
How much do the Saints look alike!!! Paul the Apostle, even though he said “For though I would desire to glory, I shall not be a fool; for I will say the truth” (2 Cor. 12:6), in the end, with the excess of logic he exclaimed: “I am become a fool in glorying” (2 Cor. 12:11).
This madness comes from the experience of God’s Love. This is the kind of MADNESS that permeated Saint Porphyrios' entire existence, this is the one he was referring to. THIS MADNESS IS AN INVISIBLE, to most people, WORLD.”
