Fisher Investments Reviews if Cooling Inflation Should Leave Investors Concerned About Deflation

Fisher Investments’ founder, Executive Chairman and Co-Chief Investment Officer, Ken Fisher, takes a closer look at the current state of inflation and examines whether we could see deflation—a decrease in prices over time. Ken believes that while inflation is cooling, deflation is improbable.

Ken explains inflation slowed partly because central banks have stopped increasing the quantity of money. While they’ve stopped increasing money supply, Ken says central banks have not significantly reduced the quantity of money enough to cause deflation. Deflation—something central banks are averse to—is painful for people since it is typically associated with recession. Ken says inflation will continue to cool at an irregular but steadily lower pace as money supply normalizes. Finally, Ken thinks fears over rising wages fueling more inflation is overblown, as historical data show wages actually lag inflation.
