What is the "Five Month Waiting Period" in SSDI Claims

One of the most confusing
One of the most confusing things about Social Security disability claims has to do with the "five month waiting period." Applicable only for SSDI claims (it does not apply in SSI cases) the five month waiting period says that Social Security will not pay you for the first five full months after you are found disabled.
How the waiting period works in real life depends on when you applied and when you were found disabled. Here are some examples:
Example 1: Tom applies for benefits on July 25, 2013 and alleges an onset of July 20, 2013. If approved, the five month waiting period runs from August, 2013 through December, 2013 and Tom's first payment will be for January, 2014.
Example 2: Tom applies for benefit on July 25, 2013 and alleges an onset of December 20, 2011. In this case, the five month waiting period runs from January, 2012 through May, 2012. Tom first becomes eligible for payment in July, 2012 (he can go back one year from his application date).
If you are not sure how the waiting period works, your lawyer can walk you through the math. Generally the earlier you are found disabled, the less impact this waiting period will have on you.
