In this video, I’m going to show you around the most deprived area in Gloucestershire, and that’s Podsmead.
Now, this isn’t just my opinion based on what I think of the area.
Gloucestershire City Council released an Indices of Deprivation report, and based on a number of criteria, Podsmead came last by a mile.
So what does it mean to live in the most deprived area in Gloucestershire?
Well, as you will see from the footage, for a start, there is litter literally everywhere.
I can’t think of many areas I’ve been across the whole country where I’ve seen more litter and large items being dumped.
People seem to think it’s OK to drop their beer cans and food packets on the floor, and dump large items in their front gardens hoping the council will magically pick them up.
The local paper also ran a story on Podsmead, saying that men from the most deprived areas in Gloucestershire die almost nine years sooner on average than those from more affluent areas.
So that’s pretty depressing.
On the housing side, there is also a bizarre contrast of being mostly small bungalows that look like they came flat-packed, and large social housing
tower blocks.
Zoopla says that the average house price in this area is around £240k, which is mindblowing really.
