For 2018 Raleigh Bicycles has the Raleigh Cadent series of fitness bicycles. The Cadent 1 is a hybrid fitness bicycle that directly competes with the Trek FX.
The Cadent 1 is a useful and well built bicycle. It can easily fulfill commuter duties or work as an excellent fitness bicycle. Overall it does a great job competing with the Trek FX. They are both priced in the same range, but there are benefits with the Raleigh Cadent 1.
The Cadent 1 has a threadless headset where the Trek FX has a quill stem. The Cadent features presta valves and Weinmann alloy wheels. The comfort grips on the Cadent flair larger than those on the base Trek FX. The biggest advantage would be that the Cadent 1 only weighs 26lbs. That's almost 3 less than the Trek FX.
Those features are all great and give the Cadent 1 a leg up, but there are other features that push the Trek FX ahead. Like the fact that the Cadent 1 doesn't have trigger shifters. Instead you get Shimano RevoShift twist shifters. I'm not a fan of twist shifters in general, but I really dislike the twist shifters on Big Box Bikes. These aren't bad, but I don't believe they belong on a $350 bike when other bikes (like the Trek FX) in the same price range have trigger shifters. Also, the twist shifters mean the comfort grips only have half the surface area to connect to the handlebar. This means they can easily be twisted, and in my riding there were two times where they physically moved outward while I was standing on the pedals trying to climb.
Overall, I think the Cadent 1 is a superior bike for the $159 sale price I paid. I would buy it again for that price, but at the regular $350 price point I can't find a good reason to buy the bike as there are other options with better shifters and comparable features.
