Alysson Muotri, PhD, director of the Stem Cell Program at UC San Diego, is leading an experiment to study the impact of microgravity on human brain development, research which could improve disease modeling for neurodegenerative and developmental disorders as well as give clues into the future of humanity in space. Muotri has developed brain organoids from stem cells to be launched into space on a Space X rocket on July 21. The organoids will spend 4 weeks onboard the ISS before returning to Earth for evaluation.
