Title-Forms of Literature Part V Prose Non-fiction
In this video we will discuss about the forms of prose (non-fiction).
Non fiction- It is based mainly on fact, even though it may contain fictional elements .
Types of prose non fiction.
1. Narrative writing- This writing tells a true story about a person, event or place.It can be written in the first person , but it always involves some research on the writer's part.
Persuasive writing- In this type of non fiction the writer takes a position on an issue for his or her side or against an opposing side. The writer will use facts and information to support his or her own argument while trying to influence his reader's opinions. Ex opened piece or editorial in the newspaper.
3.Expository writing- The purpose of this kind of non fiction to explain or inform a reader about a certain topic . Research is central to successfully executing expository non fiction.
4. Descriptive writing- It employs all five senses to use help the reader get a visual of what the writer is trying to describe.
Forms of prose non fiction
Autobiography- It tells a life story of its author, meaning it is a written record of the author's life. Rather than being written by somebody else, an autobiography comes through the person's own pen.
Ex- The story of my life by Helen Keller
The Box: Tales from the Darkroom by Gunter Grass
Biography - It is the written history or account of a person's life. They are intended to give an objective portrayal of a person, written in the third person .
Ex Churchill : A life (Martin Gilbert)
Essay - It is a short form of literary composition based on a single subject matter, and often gives the personal opinion of the author.
According to Oxford Dictionary : a short piece of writing on a particular subject.
Ex- Of Love by Francis Bacon
Pamphlet- A pamphlet is an unbound book ( that is , without a hard cover or binding ) .
It is a small , unbound booklet focused on a single subject, often educational in nature.
Memoir- It is a written factual account of somebody's life. It tells a story about the experiences of someone's life. A memoir is usually about a specific theme , or about a part of someone's life.
Travelogue- It is a truthful account of an individual,s experiences travelling, usually told in the past tense and in the first person.
Ex - Mark Twain's The Innocents Abroad.
Diary- A diary is a personal record of events, experiences, thoughts and observations.It is a regularly kept record
of the diarist's activities and reflections.
