=History==

Sacred Cowboys formed in early 1982 in Melbourne with Garry Gray on lead vocals (ex-Negatives), Terry Doolan on guitar, Janis Friedenfelds (aka Johnny Crash) on drums and Mark Ferrie on guitar (ex-Models), Ian Forrest on keyboards and Andrew Picouleau on bass guitar. From 1983 Nick Rischbieth was on bass. From 1987 Stefan Fidock was on drums. The band active since 1982, so from 1982 to 1985, 1987 to 1991, 1993 to 1997 and 2006 to 2008 plus... The 1990s and 2000s line-up included Penny Ikinger and Spencer P. Jones on guitar. Ash Wednesday also toured with the band.

Gray and Ferrie, inspired by an episode of the United States TV comedy series Get Smart, in which the Groovy Guru and his rock band, the Sacred Cows, use psychedelic music to control the minds of America's youth, named their band the Sacred Cowboys. The group initially infused their set with adaptations of Alex Chilton, Captain Beefheart, Suicide and Bob Dylan songs as they honed their original sound scapes to Gray's lyrics. They built a reputation as one of the most confrontational live outfits in the local scene - ''the Beggar's Banquet Stones meets the Velvet Underground under the machine hum of the ultimate destruction'', as one reviewer put it.

Sacred Cowboys signed with Mushroom's White Label and released, Nothing Grows in Texas, in November 1982. After a performance on TV pop show, Countdown, the host Molly Meldrum described them as the worst group I've seen in five years. Albums over the next 4 decades include Sacred Cowboys, We Love You, Trouble from Providence, Things to Come and Cold Harvest with compilation Black City in 1994 making the Australian Rolling Stone Top 100. Hit singles include Nothing Grows in Texas, Bangkok, Trouble from Providence, Hell Sucks and Black City.
