In this video, I answer the question I was asked: what is your spleen? I haven’t done any videos on this, so this one will be quick, but I wanted to answer the question because your spleen plays an important role in your health.

Your spleen is located on your right side, underneath your rib cage, below your diaphragm. It’s anywhere from 2.8 to 5.5 inches (7-14 cm) in size.

To explain what your spleen does, let’s use a metaphor. If you’ve ever been to a junkyard and seen a recycling machine at it, extracting metals and such from the junked vehicles, that’s the role in your body that your spleen carries out. It recycles your blood and iron.

Not only does the spleen recycle the precious metal iron, but also damaged red blood cells along with old and malformed ones, converting them into brand new amino acids. If these red blood cells aren’t closely monitored, they can create a lot of damage to your vascular system.

In addition to its primary recycling function, the spleen also acts as a blood reserve. It holds about a cup of blood just in case you need it. It also enhances your immune system; thus, if your spleen is removed, your susceptibility to infections goes up. That means you have to be extra certain to stay healthy. It also kills bacteria.

You can see why your spleen plays an important role in your health.
