The Cango Caves near Oudtshoorn, South Africa

The Cango Caves were discovered by Jacobus van Zyl in 1780. Van Zyl was a local farmer in the area. A second cave chamber was found in 1792. Dr Andrew Smith visited the caves in 1829 and expressed an academic interest in exploring the cave system.

It's South Africa's oldest tourist attraction. The first tour was conducted in 1891 and it's been a favourite tourist attraction ever since. It was the first to be protected by environmental legislation.
