Qantas furloughs 2,500 staff after prolonged Sydney lockdown hits demand for domestic flights

Australian airline Qantas will furlough 2,500 workers as fresh COVID-19 outbreaks and lockdowns hit demand for domestic flights. Pilots, cabin crew and airport workers from Qantas and its low-cost airline Jetstar are affected. They are mostly based in New South Wales, which has largely been cut off from the rest of Australia because of a Delta outbreak. The staff will go two months without pay from mid-August. They will still receive government payments of about $550 a week. Qantas has gone from operating almost 100% of its usual domestic flights in May, to less than 40% in July.
