Newly elected members of parliament have taken the oath of office in Bangladesh, following the June 12 elections.

Sheikh Hasina, president of the Awami League, and over a hundred members of her party were among the legislators sworn in at a ceremony in parliament.

In the next two days, Hasina is expected to be called by President Abdur Rahman Biwas to head the new government.

Nine days after the elections, Bangladesh took a step closer towards the formation of a new government.

Ministers gathered at the parliament building for the swearing in of members who'd won seats in elections on June 12.

In a simple ceremony, 132 legislators took the official vow.

Most were from the Awami League which won 146 seats out of the total 300.

The group includes the woman expected to be the country's next prime minister.

Sheikh Hasina is expected to be called to form a government within the next two days.

Speaker of the outgoing parliament -- Sheikh Razzak Ali -- presided over the ceremony.

He'd taken his oath of office earlier in the day, having himself been reelected.

After the ceremony Sheikh Hasina spoke of the Bangladeshi struggle for the right to vote.

SOUNDBITE: (English)
"Well it's the people's victory. Our people were struggling for a long time to establish their voting right, many workers were torture. People from all corners jointly struggled for democracy, for the right to vote."

Remaining law makers -- those from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party -- will be sworn in on Sunday.
