The poetry of the ghazal portrays the agony of a woman who is living alone after being abandoned by her love.

شب غم  مجھ سے مل کر ایسے روییؑ
Shab e gham mujh se mil kar aise roii
(The night-of-grief hugged me crying ...
ملا ہو جیسے صدیوں بعد کوییؑ
Mila ho jaisey sadiyyun baad koi
As if someone has met me after centuries!)
ہمیں اپنی سمجھ آتی نہیں خود
Hamain apni samaj aati nahein khud
(I cannot even comprehend myself...
ہمیں کیا خاک سمجھاےؑ کوییؑ
Hamain kiya khak samjhaye ga koi
How anyone can make me understand?)
قریب منزل کے آ کے دم ہے ٹوٹا
Qareeb manzil ke aa ke dam hai toota
(I lost my breath as I got close to my destination,...
کہاں آکر میری تقریر سوییؑ
Kahan aa kar meri taqdeer soii
Alas! At what point my destiny has dozed off!)
کچھ ایسے آج ان کی یاد آییؑ
Kuchh aisey aaj unki yaad aaii
(Tonight His memoirs flashed in my mind..
ملی ہو جیسے دولت ایک کھوییؑ
Mili ho jaisey doulat ek khoi
As if I have got the lost treasure!)
سجا رکھا ہے قفس خون و پر سے
Sajja rakha hai qafas khoon-o-par se
(I have decorated the cage (house) with my blood and feathers..
کہ اب تو بجلیاں لے آےؑ کوییؑ
Keh ab to bijilian ley aiey koi
Let someone fetch the lightning and destroy it..
