The Songhai Empire (Songhay) was a state that dominated the western Sahel/Sudan in the 15th and 16th century. At its peak, it was one of the largest states in African history. The state is known by its historiographical name, derived from its leading ethnic group and ruling elite, the Songhai. The state of Songhai arose in the West Africa savanna in the 9th century C.E. as inhabitants of the city of Gao along the Niger River expanded into the Middle Niger region...  Songhai's prosperity drew the attention of the powerful Mali Empire, which incorporated the state in the 14th century. The Songhai Kingdom later drove out the Malian forces and gained their independence. It was under the reign of Sonni Ali Ber that Songhai dramatically increased their influence and gradually captured Mali's major cities becoming one of the greatest empire in African history. #EduHistoryTV
