This is a review of the Harbor Freight Cen-Tech 3-In-1 Portable Power Pack With Jump Starter, Item # 38391.
This is a great item to have around. One day, you'll likely get stuck with a dead car battery. This item can come to the rescue. It has 2 battery clamps, and a handy work light so you can see what you're doing at night, in the rain, when your battery dies. It also has a built-in voltmeter to give you an idea of the state of charge of the unit.
As this is basically a small lead-acid battery pack, it cannot possibly start a car by itself. What it can do is replace the "surface charge" of your car battery, allowing you generally about 1 shot to start your car, to get it home or to the mechanic or what have you.
It is recommended that the battery be recharged once a month, whether used or not, and also after jump-starting a vehicle.
What makes this product really shine is that it basically is a portable 12 volt power source. This makes it exceptionally useful in times of no electricity, such as after a major storm (Hurricane Sandy comes to mind). It has a built-in 12 volt cigarette lighter port. This will allow you to recharge your cell phone or tablet device, without the need to run your car or generator. It is also useful for any other devices that run off of 12 volts, to test them.
The unit can be recharged via the included AC cord (which can also double as a short VERY LIGHT DUTY extension cord) for 120 volt appliances, or by the included 12 volt cord with cigarette lighter plug to a running vehicle. The vehicle would need to be running to provide the battery with 14 or more volts in order for it to recharge. It is best to always recharge the unit from AC whenever possible.
In times of no electricity, the unit can be hooked up to your car to recharge, to later charge or power other devices.
The included DC cord has a barrel-plug on the opposite end, which will fit various devices and power them, provided the cord is low enough gauge and is wired in the right polarity.
