Sky News host James Morrow says the problem with supermarkets is Australia has a “duopoly” which is “encouraged by government”, and the solution is going to be more competition, not more regulation.

Last year, Coles posted a $1.1 billion full-year profit, while Woolworths lifted its profits to $1.6 billion at both of their most recent full-year results.

“Peter Dutton’s office and Anthony Albanese’s office are seeing internal polling right now that says everybody hates big corporates,” Mr Morrow told Sky News host Paul Murray.

“The problem is, we have this duopoly right now which is encouraged by government – the solution to that is to not add more regulation into the mix … the solution, ultimately, is going to be more competition.

“When you talk about culture wars, this is this pattern we get into over and over again with things … somebody comes along and wants to change something that’s established, like Australia Day … and they say you’re a culture warrior. Well, no, we’re just trying to keep Australia Day.”
