Doink The Clown made his WWF debut in 1992. While looking like a harmless trickster who attended WWF shows to entertain fans in attendance and have a little fun at the expense of other wrestlers, it would turn out that this clown was maybe a little deranged. Doink's practical jokes would go from harmless to downright evil, and before wrestling fans knew it Doink was in the ring showing off his abilities as a sound techinical wrestler.

The man behind the facepaint was Matt Osborne (who previously wrestled as Matt Borne and "Big Josh" in WCW). Matt himself was a troubled man who had quite a reputation behind the scenes which made the Doink character all the more fascinating. The wrestling clown seemed to change mood multiple times during matches, he would laugh one moment then switch to a sinister scowl the next, and all of this would make fans question Doink's true motives. There was room here for a story, a real explanation about why the character began wearing facepaint and why he acted the way he did, however the story was never fully told and the gimmick was handed off to other individuals.
