Creamy Masoor Dal (Red Lentil Dal)
Ingredients:
1 cup red lentils (masoor dal), rinsed and drained
4 cups water
1 tablespoon ghee or vegetable oil
1 teaspoon cumin seeds
1 bay leaf
1 onion, finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1-inch piece ginger, grated
1 teaspoon ground turmeric
1/2 teaspoon red chili powder (adjust to taste)
1 teaspoon garam masala
Salt to taste
Chopped cilantro for garnish
Instructions:
Cook the lentils: In a pressure cooker or large pot, combine the lentils and water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low and simmer for 20-25 minutes (or follow pressure cooker instructions) until the lentils are tender but not mushy.
Make the tempering: Heat the ghee or oil in a small pan over medium heat. Add the cumin seeds and let them sizzle for a few seconds. Then add the bay leaf, onion, garlic, and ginger. Sauté until the onion is softened and golden brown.
Combine flavors: Pour the tempering into the cooked lentils. Stir in the turmeric, red chili powder, garam masala, and salt. Simmer for a few more minutes to let the flavors meld.
Serve: Garnish with chopped cilantro and serve hot with rice, roti, or naan.
Tips:
For a richer flavor, add a tablespoon of tomato puree or finely chopped tomatoes to the tempering.
For a creamier texture, you can use a blender or immersion blender to slightly puree the dal after cooking.
Adjust the spices to your taste. If you prefer a milder dal, reduce the red chili powder.
