Hello, everyone. And welcome to ForB's English lesson video. I'm Kevin, and today we're going to be working on pronunciation. Today we will work on the "heart" and "hurt" sounds.
Many students have a lot of trouble with this so, let's give it a try. First, we have "heart" which sounds very similar to "hard." Both have the "ar" sound. Notice when I say "ar", my jaw drops and it's a longer sound. "ar". "Heart, hard." "Heart, hard."
Let's give it a try. Please repeat after me. "heart, heart." OK. Very good. Notice our mouth opens, jaw drops. "heart."
Now, "hurt." We have an "ur" sound. Again, very similar to "heard."
Please be careful, this is the same spelling, but very different pronunciation. "hurt." Notice my mouth doesn't open so much. My lips push out. "hurt, hurt". "heard, hurt."
Let's give it a try. Please repeat after me. "hurt, hurt". OK. So, now let's try it together. "heart, hurt".
You try. OK. One more time. "heart, hurt." OK. OK.
Now, let's do a little test. I will say either "heart" or "hurt." Try to guess which one I say. Let's listen carefully. "hurt." Did you guess? This one. Let's try again. "heart." Did you get it? This one here. Do one more time. "heart". Yea. It was this one.
So, even though, same spelling very different sounds. So, next time you're speaking English let's try to pronounce "heart" and "hurt" correctly.
